Beeswax is a natural wax produced by honey bees of the genus Apis. Eight wax-producing glands in the abdomen of worker bees form the wax into flakes and discard them in or outside the hive. Hive worker bees collect and use beeswax to form honeycombs in the hive, for storing honey and protecting larvae and pupae. Chemically, beeswax is composed primarily of fatty acid esters and various long-chain alcohols.
To produce one pound of beeswax, bees need to consume about ten pounds of honey.
