Peak Flow Meter/Peak Expiratory Flow Meter (PEFM)
Peak flow meter:Portable and easy-to-use deviceFor asthma control.
A peak flow meter is a portable and easy-to-use device that measures the ability of the lungs to expel air. Peak flow meters measure air pressure in liters per minute and give you a reading with a built-in digital scale. It measures the airflow through the bronchi, and thus the degree of obstruction of the airways.
If you have asthma, your doctor may recommend a peak flow meter to help track the patient's asthma control. Frequent use of a peak flow meter can help control asthma by detecting airway narrowing before the patient feels any symptoms, giving time to adjust medications or taking other measures before symptoms worsen.
Peak flow meters allow patients to measure changes in their daily breathing. Using a peak flow meter can help patients: 1. Track asthma control over time 2. Reflect treatment effects 3. Recognize signs of an attack before symptoms appear 4. Know what to do when there are signs of an asthma attack 5. Decide what to do call your doctor or get first aid
When do I need to check the peak flow meter? 1. Asthma patients should regularly monitor the peak flow meter 2. Have a cold, flu or other diseases that affect breathing. 3. Need for quick relief (rescue) medication, such as inhaled albuterol.
(Check your peak flow before taking rescue medication. Check again after 20 or 30 minutes.)
Green zone = stable 1. Peak flow is 80% to 100% of optimal flow, indicating asthma is under control. 2. May have no symptoms or signs of asthma. 3. Take preventive medicines as usual. 4. If you have been in the green zone, your doctor may recommend that you reduce your asthma medication.
Yellow area = Note 1. Peak flow is 50% to 80% of optimal flow, indicating worsening asthma. 2. You may experience symptoms and signs such as coughing, wheezing, or chest tightness, but peak flow rates may decrease before symptoms appear. 3. Asthma medications may need to be added or changed.
Red area = Dangerous 1. Peak flow less than 50% of personal optimal flow indicates a medical emergency. 2. Severe coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath may occur. Dilate the airways with bronchodilators or other drugs. 3. See your doctor, take oral corticosteroids, or seek emergency care as soon as possible.
Using a peak flow meter is an effective tool for treating asthma, and you need to do the following: 1. Use an asthma action plan. Keep track of which medication to take, when to take it, and the required dose based on the green, yellow or red zone. 2. See a doctor. Even if your asthma is under control, meet regularly with your doctor to review your asthma action plan and revise it as needed. Asthma symptoms can change over time, which means treatment may need to change as well. 3. Avoid seizures. Be aware of things that cause or exacerbate asthma symptoms and try to avoid them. 4. Make healthy choices. Taking steps to stay healthy—for example, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, and not smoking—can go a long way toward reducing asthma symptoms.
It is a portable handheld device.
Used to measure your ability to push air out of your lungs and provide the correct indicator of airway condition.
