EVLA - Endovenous Laser Ablation
Intravenous laser ablation has several proprietary names, such as EVLT, ELVes, VeinSeal, depending on the manufacturer of the laser. We use the general term EVLA to refer to intravenous laser ablation because all of the various types of laser ablation are essentially the same.
EVLA is a new way to treat varicose veins without surgery. Instead of binding and removing abnormal veins, they heat them with a laser. The heat kills the vein walls, and the body then naturally absorbs the dead tissue, and abnormal veins are destroyed. It can be performed in a simple treatment room rather than an operating room. EVLA is performed under local anesthesia as a "walk-out" technique.

What is Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA)?
During the 45-minute procedure, a laser catheter was inserted into the defective vein. This is usually done under local anesthesia using ultrasound guidance. The laser heats the lining inside the vein, destroying it and causing it to shrink, then seal. Once this happens, the closed veins can no longer carry blood, eliminating bloated veins by correcting the source of the problem. Because these veins are superficial, they are not necessary for carrying oxygen-poor blood back to the heart. This function will naturally transfer to healthy veins. In fact, since varicose veins are by definition compromised, it can actually be detrimental to your overall circulatory health. While not life-threatening, it should be addressed before further complications develop.
The 1470nm laser energy is preferentially absorbed by the intracellular water of the vein wall and the moisture in the blood. The irreversible photothermal process induced by the laser energy results in complete occlusion of the treated vein. Using radial laser fibers requires lower energy levels compared to bare laser fibers, significantly reducing adverse effects.
