An electrolytic cell breaks down compounds by using electrical energy, a process called electrolysis; the Greek word "crack" means "to break down". The result is an increase in chemical energy. Important examples of electrolysis are the splitting of water into hydrogen and oxygen and bauxite into aluminum and other chemicals.
An electrolytic cell consists of three components: an electrolyte and two electrodes (cathode and anode). Electrolytes are usually solutions of water or other solvents in which ions are dissolved. The electrical energy provided eliminates the effects of spontaneous chemical reactions.
