The chlorinator electrolytic cell is part of the overall system that actually produces chlorine in the cell. Sodium chloride or table salt dissolved in water passes through the cells. A small amount of current flows into a set of parallel titanium plates inside the cell. The plates are covered with a metal called iridium, which electrolysis separates sodium chloride molecules and creates hypochlorous acid, the same substance that is produced by adding chlorine (in the form of tablets, granules, or liquid water) to non-saline pools of water , keep the swimming pool sanitized. Ultimately, two things happen to the plate in the cell. The first is that the iridium coating wears down over time and causes the battery to fail. The second problem is that these plates can build up limescale, reducing potential chlorine production.

Long life salt battery:Electrochlor's salt batteries consist of a series of oppositely charged titanium electrodes. Electrochlor's clear salt pool enclosure allows for visual inspection of salt pool slabs and monitoring of chlorine production. The battery case is made of clear UV stabilized acrylic. Both the anode and cathode of the self-cleaning chlorinator are made of uniquely coated titanium mesh for extra durability and longevity.

Low maintenance:Electrochlor self-cleaning salt batteries have the additional ability to reverse the voltage polarity to remove calcium build-up on their electrodes.
