1. Characteristics of tungsten foil.
Tungsten metal is shiny, silvery white, and does not occur naturally (1 ppm in the earth's crust). It is found in the ore wolframite, a tungstate of iron and manganese, (FeMn)WO4, which is converted to the trioxide, which is then reduced to the metal by hydrogen reduction (carbon cannot be used because very stable carbides are produced). Tungsten metal is relatively inert and resistant to attack by oxygen, acids and bases, but it will react with molten oxidizing base media. It has the highest melting point of all metals and, if pure, is relatively easy to work with; however, the presence of impurities makes tungsten extremely brittle, making it difficult to manufacture.
Tungsten is a relatively rare metal. It is the most difficult among molten metals, with a melting point as high as 3410. The density of tungsten products is 19.3g/cm3.
